This course will examine the origins of peace and conflict in South Asia. The focus will be on contemporary South Asia, drawing on case studies from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Maldives. Domestic developments will be covered in detail, and will also be situated in the larger context of international relations and global governance. Regional issues, such as nuclear proliferation and terrorism, will also be addressed, as will other contentious issues such as the status of Kashmir, the spread of identity-based conflicts, and gender-related violence.
