About
Professor Gottreich is a scholar of North Africa and the Middle East. Her courses include “Current Events in the MENA” (MES 24), “Survey of World History” (IAS 45), “Jews and Muslims” (MES 130/HIS 100), “North Africa: History, Culture, Society” (MES 150), “Scope and Methods of Research in MES” (MES 102) and “Senior Thesis/Honors Thesis in MES” (MES 190/H195). She also supervises the two MES internships, “Voices of the Middle East and North Africa,” and “Ambassador Stevens Internship,” and serves as faculty adviser for the Model Arab League. Her research interests revolve around cities and urban life in the Middle East and North Africa, Magrhribi social history, Muslim-Jewish relations, and constructions of Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Arab Jewish identity.
She holds a Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University, an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University and a B.A. from UC Berkeley in Middle Eastern Studies. From 2009-2013 she served as the President of the American Institute of Maghrib Studies. Prof. Gottreich is the author of The Mellah of Marrakech: Jewish and Muslim Space in Morocco’s Red City (2007) and co-editor of Jewish Culture and Society in North Africa (2011). Her forthcoming work is entitled Jewish Morocco from Pre-Islamic to Post-Colonial Times.
